  • French Toast Bacon Bombs: Bacon A-Fair’s new breakfast-inspired offering will make French toast desirable any time of the day as sweet dough stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon is deep-fried and rolled in cinnamon sugar.
  • S’moreo Texas Donut: Bigger is better when it’s a soft, Texas-sized doughnut topped with chocolate drizzle, Oreo cookie crumble, graham cracker crumbs and marshmallow cream.
  • Bacon Nutella Pickle: Pickle O’ Pete’s takes the popular hazelnut cocoa spread Nutella and fills a dill pickle that gets wrapped in bacon, dipped in a funnel cake batter and deep fried.
  • Pork Belly Bacon Dog: At Biggy’s, two feet of bacon are wrapped around a slow-smoked pork belly that is dipped into a corn dog batter and deep fried.
  • Deep-Fried Pizza Log: Mozzarella cheese and pepperoni are wrapped inside of thin pizza dough which is deep fried until crispy and flaky. Served with marinara sauce on the side from the Apple Fries booth.
  • Diabilito Sundae: Fruit Caboose is going loco and adding to their creamy ice cream the Latin-inspired flavor of tangy Tamarindo and hot chili chamoy sauce.
  • Kool-Aid Hot Wings: Chicken Charlie’s taking his breaded wings and tossing them up with his new, slightly-spicy Kool-Aid sauce. He will serve the orange flavor exclusively at the OC Fair.
  • Dole Whip: Fairgoers can cool down with this refreshing, pineapple-flavored soft serve dessert available for the first time inside the OC Fair at Crutchee’s Ice Cream.
  • Bacon-Wrapped Baked Potato: At Bacon A-Fair, a giant one-pound potato is wrapped in a half pound of bacon and slow cooked in a wood-fired smoker oven. Served with butter, the Bacon A-Fair signature bacon-infused sour cream, grilled veggies, blue cheese and choice of hot buffalo sauce or nacho cheese and jalapenos.
  • Bacon Cheddar Brat Burger: Grant’s Tasti Burger is taking burgers and brats to the next level with this massive burger that combines a bratwurst and an Angus beef patty with cheddar, chopped candied pecans, Applewood smoked bacon, Sriracha Bourbon and chipotle sauces, lettuce and tomatoes and served inside a pretzel bun.
  • Pink’s Hollywood-Inspired Dogs: The Daenerys Mother of Doggies pays homage to the Game of Thrones’ queen of the dragons with a spicy Polish dog topped with sour cream, sauerkraut, onions, radish sprouts and Sriracha sauce. The Lord of the Rings Dog highlights the mystical movie with an all-beef hot dog encircled by fried onion rings and topped with barbecue sauce.
  • Juicys: New this year, OC Fair mainstay Juicys is serving up organic meat and nitrate-free hot dogs and sausages.
  • More Offerings: All American Reuben Burger (Grant’s Tasti Burger), Pickle Fries and Pickled Cheese on a Stick (Pickle O’ Pete’s), Shrimp Fried Rice on a Stick (Chicken Charlie’s), Som-Mor-Bacon (Fruit Caboose), Bison Burger (Juicy’s), Lasagna Sandwich (Pignotti’s Pasta), Oreo Churro (Dutchmen’s Funnel Cake).

Things We Eat, These Days….

I feel like our meals have gotten a little easier, a little lazier. Big T and I both have been working so much, that’s we haven’t had the time to prepare the meals we used to. On days that I work from home, I start to cook dinner around 4:30. I try to have different options for Little T and I don’t pressure him to eat one thing or another. His favorite meal is rice, and would probably have it every meal if he could. Big T makes a lot of brown rice and freezes it in single serving bags for us to pull out and use for meals. Little T likes it the best with avocado, lemon, and a little Braggs Liquid Amino Acids. On days when I’m not home, Big T takes over for dinner.

I’d like to say that I make beautiful salads every night, but to make our life easier, I’ve been using the salad bar at Mothers Market on my way home from Disneyland. I get a lot of salad and chopped veggies dry, and we use it for meals through the next day.

So here’s what we’ve been munching on. Someday, we’ll start making those elaborate vegan meals that have been bookmarked in my cookbooks again….some day…..;)

Pasta, avocado, bread, watermelon, green olives, and salad:

Couscous, vegetable soup, peas, and salad:

Baked tortilla chips, beans and rice, vegetable soup, and veggies:

Couscous, mango, Amy’s brand vegan Mac and cheese, salad, and avocado:

Corn on the cob at the Fair (one of our staple fair foods).

Corn chips, salsa, and fresh squeezed apple juice from Mothers Market:

Deconstructed Home Made Black Bean Burgers with bread, pickles, and ketsup:

We were traveling on this day, so I packed rice, and in a separate container had avocado and half a lemon to squeeze in:

So that’s our not-so-glamorous food routine. Pretty basic, but it works for our little family. (P.S. Little T is in love with that Snow White doll).

We’re having some family and friends over for a weekend of fun filled Halloween activities. Here’s what we’re planning on making:

Halloween Dinner: It’s a potluck, so we’re only in charge of a few items.

Fruit Compote

  • Homemade Spiced Cider
  • Creamy Pumpkin Penne with Crips Sage and Toasted Pecans from Chef Chloe
  • Unstuffy Stuffing with Mushrooms and Walnuts from The Veggie Queen Cookbook
  • Spiced Fall Fruit Compote with Figs over Vanilla Ice Cream, also from The Veggie Queen Cookbook
Breakfast for our Guests:
  • Vegan Crepes with Vegan Nutella and fruit
Halloween Dinner:
We wanted something special for Halloween, but also something we could make a few days before so we weren’t cooking. We decided on our favorite chili recipe from Susan at FatFreeVegan. If you haven’t tried this recipe, you should! It’s so hearty and filling and tasty.

  • Gold Rush Chili from Susan at FatFreeVegan
  • Freshly Baked Bread
  • Vegan Candy Bar that you can order from Food Fight Grocery. It’s the only time a year that I allow myself to eat a candy bar, and these are the best out there.

I love San Francisco. I love the history, the weather, the culture, and the food. I lovveeeeeee the food. Before I start posting about the food we ate, I should clear something up. The person I was staying with asked me how on earth I eat so much without gaining a ton of weight. I wish I could say I’m one of those people who can eat whatever they want and not suffer the consequences, but that’s simply not the case! When I’m home, I follow a low-fat strict vegetarian diet with no dairy. When I go on vacation, I splurge. When we travel I try to stay in places with a kitchen so I don’t go too crazy (because I always feel gross when I verge too far from my routine), but occasionally on vacations or special dinners, I eat.

A lot.

This was one of those trips.

Okay, so back to SF. Big T told me we were going to have to take public transportation to save some taxi $$$. I panicked as I imagined hauling Little T, the car seat, the stroller, and our luggage around. After a good hour of mulling it over, I decided we could pack everything we needed in two backpacks so we’d only be carrying the car seat and the stroller. To tell you the truth, it was kind of a fun challenge!

We’d planned an evening plane ride so Little T would sleep, but he was really excited when we got to the airport and didn’t sleep until the plane was in the air. Once we were in the air, we were both happy to get snuggle time and Little T fell asleep.

He's such a little snuggle-bug.

On the airport, we utilized our electronic gadgets to get us through the short trip. Oh technology, how I do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

1. Watching an episode of “Modern Family on our iphone.

2. Reading “The Help” on my kindle.

3. Knowing exactly when our bus was coming.

4. Landing and being able to search for coffee.

The next night, Big T and I had a date at Millennium. It’s our favorite vegan restaurant because it serves unapologetic vegan food. By that I mean, there isn’t “fake meat” in sight. It’s pricey, so this was only our second visit and the third probably wont come for a while, but it’s always worth it!

We ordered a White Russian to drink.

For an appetizer we had fried oyster mushrooms with a carrot salad and a lemon dressing.

Fried Oyster Mushrooms

For my entree, I had this pastry that had a savory flavor and was filled with potatoes:

Big T had a grilled portabella mushroom with risotto, and for dessert I had chocolate lava cake and he had a berry cobbler.

The next day, I managed to convince Big T to travel out to Berkeley. The reason? I wanted Cinnamon Rolls, and I wanted them bad! We went to Cinnaholic, a vegan cinnamon roll shop. This is the way it works over there. First, you get a gourmet cinnamon rolls. Next, you pick a flavor of frosting. They have about 20 different flavors and we were feeling so overwhelmed! After you decide on the frosting, they let you pick a topping. I decided on the plain frosting with cookie dough. Big T had mint with oreos, and the helpful lady at the counter (who was so friendly, we could have stayed and talked with her for an hour), said her favorite was lemon frosting and raspberry. I’m going to have to try that next time.

We took the BART over to Mission. Little T had a great time sitting with us and taking the BART and the bus and shouted gleefully at people entering and exiting. I think he was saying hello and goodbye in baby babble.

Little T is a subway pro.

Mission is bright and colorful, with amazing murals all over the place. Here was my favorite building:

A Building in Mission

We went to a Mexican food restaurant that has a lot of vegan options. Amazingly, we found room to eat, even after the cinnamon rolls.

Ordering lunch in Mission

On the way home, we stopped at the Stern Grove Music Festival. The concert was beautiful. We made our way to the side area so Little T could run around without being disruptive. It was a nice end to a fun day.

Practicing Walking at Stern Grove

We were sad when our trip came to an end, but we were also glad to have a few weekends at home. Our yard is getting a bit overgrown and we have animals to snuggle with. I also have a few projects at home that I’m looking forward to getting started on.

Big T: Do you have anything you want to do when we’re in San Francisco?

Momma J: (In a casual tone, so as not to create any suspicion) Oh, I don’t know. I was thinking we might take a trip to Oakland.

Big T: Oakland, why do you want to go to Oakland?

Momma J: Errrr….I’ve just always wanted to go there?

Big T: *raises one eyebrow* Okay? Anything else?

Momma J: I’d love to visit Berkeley.

Big T: What? Berkeley is really far out of the way.

Momma J: Trust me. It’s worth the trip.

Big T: Wait a second, are you planning our vacation around food again? You know we’re going to see friends, right?

Momma J: Friends who will need to eat?

Big T: *sigh*

ovarian cyst, vegan, vegan diet health

I was talking with a friend this morning about ovarian cysts (w00t w00t), and realized it has been such a long time since I’ve changed my diet. It made me think about the reasons I made the lifestyle change that I did. It’s hard for me to share, because my experience made me feel incredibly vulnerable. Writing about that time makes those feelings come flooding back, but I’m finally getting to the point where it doesn’t sting. As much, anyway.

My health decline started in the middle of high school. Just to give you a little more background about myself, I’ve always had an excitement for life. I still hate going to sleep because I don’t want to miss out on anything. I was thrilled to transfer to a performing arts school for my freshman year, and I wanted to be involved in absolutely everything. I was the ASB Vice President, a member of the Improv Club, taking dance lessons, and performing in amateur theater. I also worked at a costume shop in my “spare time”. You name it, I did it. I loved every second of it, but as the years went on, it became harder to do all of the things I loved to do. I’d come home exhausted. I’m not talking a little tired from having a long day, I was so tired that I’d have to pull my car over in the afternoon and take a nap until I was able to drive safely again. Everything was hard, and I’d have to spend my energy wisely. Sometimes I’d stop and lie down on the floor and stare at the ceiling of my bedroom and wish I could muster up the motivation to move my arm. I had to force myself to continue doing all of the things I loved. As I began to get more and more tired, I started having all of these strange side effects. I had acid reflux, I felt sick to my stomach all the time, I kept fainting and having dizzy spells. Sometimes I’d wake up in the middle of the night and throw up for no reason. I felt awful. I hated being a “sick person”, but my Mom and I had to start seeing a million different doctors. None of them were helpful. Most of them were rude. When they couldn’t think of anything, they told me the pain was in my head. After a while, I started to believe them. They were doctors, after all.

After having one doctor suggest I see a psychiatrist for “making up my pain”, I decided that everyone must feel sick, the way that I did. I was probably over exaggerating. It must be normal to feel awful, and it was time  to go on with my life and accept that I’d feel bad all the time and that I should stop complaining. It was like I was keeping a secret. I didn’t want to complain because I was worried I’d be labeled a hypochondriac, but I was in pain all of the time. In the meantime, my stomach started to grow. People started asking me if I was pregnant. I was skinny everywhere except for my stomach. Every time I’d get the pregnancy question, I’d start another diet and never lose any weight. It was a lot for a high school girl to handle. There was so much pressure to be thin and there was nothing I could do about my expanding waistline.

After high school, I moved to a new town to go to college and get a fresh start. I wanted to go someplace where nobody knew I’d ever complained about my health. I wanted to go someplace where I could pretend to be healthy and not be labeled as a “sick person”. I was pretty good at keeping this up, even though I’d have to stop halfway to class because I’d begin to feel like I was going to faint. One day, I went to the health clinic at school because I had strep throat. Even though I insisted I wasn’t pregnant and that there was no way I could possibly be pregnant, the doctor took one look at my huge stomach and made me take a pregnancy test. I was so irritated and insulted, and I didn’t feel well because I knew I had strep throat. The college nurse came in and I think the exhaustion from strep throat and my illness made me burst into tears. I’d had it. I told her I was tired of being asked if I was pregnant all of the time.

I sat there crying, waiting for her to tell me that I was making things up. I was shocked when she looked at me with concern and listened. For the first time, someone from the medical profession had actually HEARD me. She listened as I told her my secret. She didn’t make me feel rushed, and she told me to wait for her after my doctor’s appointment was over. The doctor came in and told me I wasn’t pregnant. I rolled my eyes at the big shock, and asked him to please give me a throat culture so I could get rid of my strep throat, already. Sheesh.

After my appointment, the nurse took me to her office. For the first time, I had an advocate. She grabbed the phone book and began calling doctors and asking them questions that I didn’t know I needed to ask. She talked to the receptionists to get a feel for their office, and finally found someone who she said she felt comfortable sending me to. She said that if I had any more problems, to come and see her again. Per her instructions, I made an appointment and went to the doctor. I sat in the waiting room of this new doctor, and while I was there I had another man ask me when my due date was. I told him I wasn’t pregnant, and felt guilty and embarrassed as he apologized to me. Frustrated, I cried to my new doctor and told him that everyone asked if I was pregnant and that it didn’t make sense for my stomach to be so big. He immediately scheduled an ultrasound.

During my ultrasound, I could tell something was very wrong. The woman performing the ultrasound looked really alarmed and started asking me all of these questions. I got a call from my doctor an hour later and he told me they’d found a cyst. It was 11 by 11 and a half inches. They were going to remove it as soon as he could schedule an appointment. Five years of being in pain, and someone finally figured out what was wrong.

I went from a size 18 to a size 8 on the day they removed my cyst. I felt lopsided as I walked to my apartment in my new body. I took a bath and was amazed that I could actually see my toes. There was a rumor going around work that I’d given birth and given the baby away for adoption. Yep. At least I was used to the pregnancy rumors by then. Besides, I did give birth, to a 22 pound cyst. Hardy har har.

I really thought that after they removed my cyst, that all of my health problems would be gone. I didn’t think of my diet and the reason the cyst was there in the first place. It took me a few more years to figure that out, but I’ll have to save that for next time because I have a baby that’s waking up and I have a feeling he’s going to need my attention. 😉

Vegan and Gluten Free Carrot and Potato Soup

Carrot and Potato Soup

This is one of Little T’s favorites. We make a big batch of it and eat it throughout the week.

Ingredients:

Two bags of Carrots

Small Potatoes (we use about 1 potato for every 3 carrots)

2 cloves garlic

1 chopped yellow onion

vegetable broth

cumin to taste

curry to taste

lime

salt and pepper to taste

First we put a bit of olive oil in the cooking pot and brown the onions and garlic. Once they’re finished, we add potatoes, carrots and spices and mix them together to get the spices to meld. Then we add the vegetable broth and simmer until the carrots and potatoes are soft (about 30-40 minutes).

Little T can probably eat it without being blended, but we like the consistency when it’s blended. We used a hand mixer  to blend, and then added the lime. Taste the soup to see if you need to add more spices.

A  lot of friends ask what Little T eats, so I thought I’d post some of the food we make on here. I love cooking for Little T. It makes me feel happy inside, especially when he grabs the bowl with his little fingers and plants his face in the middle of it because he’s enjoying his food so much that he wants to inhale it. I guess teaching table manners might have to come later. 😉

Roasted Butternut Squash

Little T had roasted butternut squash for lunch yesterday. He thought it was pretty awesome. So awesome, in fact, that he gave a little cheer. The butternut squash is a nice meal because it’s soft and yummy and he’s able to pick it up with his little fingers. I can also make a lot of it at once and save the rest for snacks or later meals. It’s also easy to make.

Can a baby be healthy on a vegan diet?

Yes, of course they can! Little T was in the 1st percentile when he entered our lives, and now he’s grown into the 86th. Our doctor said little T’s as healthy as can be. He’s only had one cold, which I think is a pretty good track record for such a social butterfly who spends lots of time with other babies.

Long Term Veganism for Little T?

We don’t ever want Little T to feel like we’re forcing veganism on him. When he’s at our house and with our family, we’re going to cook the way we always cook and eat the way we eat. When he’s with a friend or at school and they have an ice cream party that we didn’t know about and weren’t able to prepare for, we don’t want him to feel bad or left out. We think he should decide if he wants to try ice cream and learn things for himself. I’ve known vegan kids who turned vegetarian, were adamant vegans, and who grew up to eat meat. Who knows how Little T will turn out, but We hope that he’ll grow up loving healthy food and that he’ll understand the reason his parents eat the way they do. If we succeed at that, then I think we’re doing something right.

Vegan Traveling

Vegan travel isn’t nearly as complicated as it used to be. I remember 10 years ago, when I had to walk in the snow 12 miles to get to school, I’d always have to bring my own vegan food when I traveled. Now it’s easy to find a Chipotle or Panera, or even an all vegan restaurant that was referred from awesome websites like www.thehappycow.net, but what do you do when you’re in an area where you can’t *gasp* utilize your smart phone?!?

This happens to us every once in a while. We’ll sneak off to a place where there aren’t a lot of restaurants or grocery stores to fall back on. Those places are nice, because who wants to see the same old restaurants and grocery stores everywhere? But they do require extra planning. For our vacation to Cherry Valley and Oak Glen, we knew it was going to be a challenging trip. Fortunately, years of experience made it pretty snag-less (go us!) Here’s what we did to make sure we ate well, because it is a vacation, after all!

We started out in Cherry Valley for a Lavender Festival at the Highland Springs Resort. It used to be called “The Last Resort”, and was a vegetarian wellness center that Albert Einstein used to frequent (no joke!) We technically could have ventured into town and eaten at Subway or something, but who wants to leave a place that looks like this:

Do you see what I mean?

It was kind of like that poppy field in “The Wizard of Oz”…….poppies…………..*suddenly in a daze with silly grin on face*

So this is what we did:

1. We researched the few restaurants we could find on location ahead of time and called to make reservations and ensure they could make us a vegan meal.

2. We requested an *empty* mini-fridge for our room. They said it wouldn’t be a problem, but we discovered they’d forgotten once we were there. They were nice enough to let us store our perishables in their main fridge until they could get the mini-fridge in our room. They didn’t have a microwave in the room so we had to use things that didn’t need to be heated.

Next we went to stay at a B&B in Oak Glen. This was a little more challenging, because there weren’t any restaurants around.

3. We called the B&B ahead of time to make sure they knew we were vegan. We gave them a few simple ideas for our breakfast, and they said it would be no problem. They gave us an amazing breakfast, and asked if we had any tips for the next time they run into vegan travelers.

4. We brought sandwich items like avocado, pickles, and hummus. When we were out for the day, it was easy to find a restaurant that served sandwiches. We asked them to put as much produce as they had on the sandwiches, and made then added some yummy extras.

Adding avocado and other fixings to our sandwich...

5. We brought some of our favorite snacks, but they only lasted about five minutes. That’s always the problem with good snacks, isn’t it?

6. We lugged everything around in a cooler until we got to our destinations. We’d asked the B&B if we could use their fridge, and they didn’t mind a bit. It was a bit of a pain, but worth it.

If you have any other vegan traveling tips, let me know. I’m always glad to hear new ideas.

Fancy Vegan Party Food

This food was GONE by the end of the night. It was like a vegan hurricane swirled by the table and snagged everything up. My sweet husband and brother in law did all of the cooking. Here’s what was on the table…

Chocolate dipped strawberries

Stuffed Mushrooms

Lemon Bars

Strawberry Tarts

Olive Tampenade

Bruschetta

Fresh Grapes

Cheese and Cracker Platter
