Life with a three year old

Last night, Little T and I were driving home late from Anaheim. I was feeling a little grumpy, not for any particular reason. I was listening to a song and Little T wanted to listen to a different one, and I was trying to explain that it isn’t safe to play with the iPhone while you’re driving. To make a long story short, I got a bit distracted and went the wrong way in the freeway. I didn’t notice it until we were all the way in Newport Beach because of my deep discussion with Little T on paying attention while you’re driving. Irony!

I told him I made a mistake and went the wrong way, and he said in his little voice, “it’s okay momma! Keep trying, NEVER give up! Never give up!” It made me chuckle. When we finally did get back on the freeway in the right direction, Little T started to cheer and shout that we did it. It made me smile. 🙂

The other day we were photographing the sweetest couple at La Quinta Resort by Palm Springs. The two T’s came along and played in the background. I was about to take some walking photos when We ran into Little T. We told him he should watch the couple walk because they are really good at walking. When I started taking photos of them walking towards me, he started shouting, “GREAT JOB, GUYS!” And was giving them a thunderous applause. We were all laughing at his enthusiasm, it was pretty cute. He can’t ever do anything halfway, can he? The next day we were looking at photos and he said, “momma, they were really good walkers!”

Anyway, there are a lot of things about the age of three that are tough. It’s definitely been the most challenging for me and Big T. At the same time though, there are so many things about 3 that I love. His enthusiasm for cheering people on is definitely one of them. 🙂

About Little T…..

Little T had his back to school night this week. When we were there, the teacher pulled us aside to mention how well-liked he was. We nodded and said we were glad to hear it, and she said, “No, I don’t think you understand. He knows everybody in this school. He knows the cafeteria ladies, he knows all of the teachers, he knows all of the receptionists, the office people. He says hello to everyone as he passes by, and he plays with all the kids. The cafeteria lady plays basketball with him, the kids in the other classes all know him, everyone loves him. He’s just a happy and friendly kid”. Of course, there are things for him to work on. He has zero interest in any of the projects that require him to sit down for more than a minute at a time. Big T and I laugh because we can always tell which art projects are his because they are the one with the least stuff-or maybe he’s just a minimalist. 😉 His voice is very loud, he’s one of the more…errrr, energetic kids in the class, and he doesn’t always sit patiently in circle time. I don’t think he’ll ever be one of those kids who sits quietly in the corner, but I’m glad that he’s kind and friendly. It’s a good quality to have.

This was one of those unusually busy weeks, where Big T becomes Mr. Mom while I hop from one event to the next. It was a lot easier this time around, physically and mentally. I think this means it’s starting to become a normal for us to have crazy lives. 😉

Wednesday: Wedding at the Grand that had me genuinely surprised when I turned around and saw everyone had formed a giant pyramid…

Thursday, the family checked into the Grand and back I was back for another wedding. The details were gorgeous and Heather did most of them herself!

Friday: Working for the Mouse!

And taking a quick break at D23 to see my family. Little T had a lightsaber and was determined to take Darth Vader down a notch or two.

My sweet mother in law may not look so sweet in this photo, but she did spend the weekend with us at the Grand to help out. 😉

Even though I had carried two cameras and a heavy back pack all over the place, I was back at 7:00am Saturday morning. I’m not going to lie, I was super excited to be there. :p

20130814-094645.jpg

I finished around noon and drove to Pasadena for wedding #3! They had a big Band playing and Louise and I felt like we were at a concert, it was magical!

The next day, we took Little T to Disneyland for his birthday. He has now discovered Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and he thinks it is incredible.

20130814-094857.jpg

I was so exhausted, that when I got home and parked in the driveway, I fell asleep in the car. Big T had to come wake me up and get me. He’s good like that.

The next day, I was back working for the mouse, and on Tuesday I was in Pasadena again for an e-shoot. Today I’m off to Newport. Tomorrow? I sleep.

This is my life…

Sometimes I have a glimpse of myself as an almost “cool” like person. I was having one of those moments yesterday. I’d come home from a fun trip to the beach that included a limo ride and wine tasting, and was about to head off to a family event, which was going to be followed by a photo shoot near the Griffith Observatory. I was doing laundry and thinking about what a nice week I’d had and what I would wear for the day, when I realized I hadn’t gone over our family schedule for the next week. In a rash decision, I decided to do housework and go over the schedule with everyone at the same time (multi-tasking-win!), and without thinking I ran out the front door with a handful of underwear. Little T was in the front yard on his bike with a Darth Vader mask on, of course. I waved my underwear filled hand in the air to get their attention and started shouting, “family meeting, family meeting”!!! As I was shouting, a neighbor walked by and looked at miniature Darth Vader on his bicycle, and my shouting self with a handful of panties. It looked kind of like this:

mothermoment

So, I think I’ll just accept that I’m not ever going to be that cool mom. I’m going to be the mom that runs around with underwear in her hand and shouts dorky things about family meetings to her children. Little T, on the other hand, totally rocked that Darth Vader mask. I think there is hope for him.

Road Trips and Car Rides with Toddlers

We just arrived home from our week long vacation. We’re still settling in and getting back into our routine, but I wanted to share how Little T survived the 14+ hours we spent traveling in our car.

I’d spent a long time searching for strategies and suggestions online. I found a few good ideas, like the Car Ride Bingo, but most of them I just recycled from my days teaching kindergarten. I hope this helps for any soon to be tiny travelers~

The first thing I did, was grab a bunch of big envelopes from the garage. These are pretty cheap to purchase if you don’t have any on hand. Toddlers have short attention spans, so I made ten envelopes filled with different games, then stored them all in this Sprouts bag so I could easily grab a folder during the car ride. I know it isn’t pretty, but I’m busy and wanted them to be functional and easy, so I used a giant sharpee and wrote the names of the games in big letters on the top of the envelope. This made it easy breezy to sort through them.

Road Trips and Car Rides with Toddlers

Each envelope had a different activity that were a mix of things for different moods and temperaments. If he was calm, we’d read him a book, if he was hyper we’d pull out the manipulatives, etc. Here’s the game list:

1. Car Bingo
2. Doctor
3. Magazine game
4. Books
5. New Movie (5$ Elmo alphabet movie from Target)
6. Find the colors
7. Guess the letter
8. Manipulatives
9. Map

And here’s a run down of the games:

Group Games:

1. Car Bingo:make a bingo sheet and search for the cars you see on the road.

2. Guess the letter: Write the letters A, B, and C on flash cards. Fold them in half and place them in the envelope. When it’s time to play, pull a folded card out of the envelope and have everyone guess which letter it is. The person who is right, wins.

Keep those hands busy games:

1. Find the color: twist up a bunch of colored pipe cleaners. Give it to them, and ask them to give you a certain color. They will tune up their fine motor skills as the have to twist and turn the pipe cleaners to get the right color out.

Road Trips and Car Rides with Toddlers

Manipulatives:
We’ve been collecting cheap little things to keep his hands busy in the car. We have to supervise when he plays with these, but Little T loves it when we pull one out. In our bag we have bubble wrap for him to pop (need adult next to him for this), a twisty man, a little fan, a squishy baseball, party blowers, bird whistle, a rhino balloon, harmonica, and a few other things for him to play with.

Road Trips and Car Rides with Toddlers

More Mellow Activities:

1) Doctor: I grabbed some coloring pages and told Little T that we were going to play doctor. We had him clean off Belle with a dry towel or tissue, then pretend to put medicine on her with a q-tip, then put on a band aide. This was one of his favorite games.

Road Trips and Car Rides with Toddlers

2) Magazine: Use a kids magazine and go through it ahead of time. Make a list of things for your toddler to find as they go through the magazine. Tell them what they need to find, and once they have found it move on to the next object. To simplify this, I wrote the list on the folder with a sharpee.

Road Trips and Car Rides with Toddlers

Map: Print out a google road map with directions to where you are going. Circle towns that you will go through, and mark it with stickers as you pass through the town. I taped the map to the outside of the folder.

Road Trips and Car Rides with Toddlers

When you need a break:

1) New Movie: we have a DVD player that we use for wind down and quiet time. Purchase a 5$ movie or borrow one from a friend. We bought Elmo’s alphabet jungle. We also have a few favorites on hand, but this was a nice short movie to pull out and surprise him with.

2) A New Book: We mingled a few new 1$ books we found, along with some of his favorites. I bought some really simple books and read him the story, then I had him “read” the story back to me. We also just let him look through the books.

The other thing we did was pack a travel snack box. When he was hungry, he loved being able to choose what he wanted from this box. We threw in Kind Bars, apple sauce, oranges, instant oatmeal (we stop and get hot water from the gas station to make this when we travel) apple juice, and fruit bars.

Road Trips and Car Rides with Toddlers

I think the most important thing to remember is that kids have short attention spans. Little T loved all these games, but we switched around a lot. We also adapted the games a to make them a little different on the way back. Overall though, they were a really big success and didn’t take up a lot of space in the car. He started asking to play games first thing when we got in the car, so I think he really enjoyed it. We’re going to keep some in the car for good.

Happy car traveling friends. Let me know if you have any travel ideas that you think Little T would also like. We’re taking another long trip this summer and have a plane (ack) trip coming up. Definitely open to ideas. 🙂

Another Busy Week

I wouldn’t trade photography for anything, but it does make my schedule a little sporadic sometimes. Especially because I photograph destination weddings and my weddings are usually on weekdays. This was one of those weeks where our family just had to throw our schedule out the window and go with the flow!

On Wednesday, I met with two different potential couples at the Disneyland Hotel. It reminded me of when Big T and I were getting married, and the excitement of planning and meeting vendors. On my way out, I ran into Tara of Fairytale Hair and Makeup at Trader Sam’s. Her family was celebrating a birthday, so I joined them for a while! M met up with us too because I’d brought a few odds and ends that she’d left at our house. We all chatted for a bit before watching the fireworks together at the Disneyland Hotel.

The next day, I had a wedding to photograph at the White House in Anaheim. When I walked into the bridal suite, Joy’s dress was hanging in such a beautiful way, that I snapped a photo with my phone before I even had a chance to pull out my camera.

photo (13)Isn’t this couch gorgeous? I could have sat on it all day, but that wouldn’t have been very productive, seeing as how I was there to photograph their wedding and all. 😉 Tara was doing Joy’s hair and makeup, and it was fun to work together at a new venue.

IMG_4625_small

The White House was an exquisite venue. I wish I’d had more time to wander around and take photos of Joy and Eric. But then again, it’s good that I was on a schedule because I probably could have taken photos of them for hours and hours. The staff was very friendly, and set up the fanciest vendor meal table I’ve ever sat at. My assistant Louise and I joked that we were having a very romantic dinner together, and that our spouses would be very jealous. 😉

Dinner at the White House Anaheim

Dinner at the White House Anaheim

This was Louise’s meal, they made me a special pasta with eggplant and vegetables.

Joy and Eric’s family were fun to photograph, especially when they all began dancing. There’s something about dancing that makes me really happy. When I was taking anthropology, we learned that every single culture dances and sings. I’ve always wondered what it was about singing and dancing that was a necessary part of of being human. I don’t know, but I do know that watching dancing feeds my soul and makes me smile. There was a point when all the adults were singing and dancing together with Joy’s four year old niece. It was such a sweet and special moment. She looked so happy to have everyone singing and dancing to her, I bet she’ll remember it forever.

After we said our goodbyes, we drove to J’s house to spend the night. We had a morning castle shoot the next morning and had to wake up at 4:00 AM, and it would have been too difficult to drive home and back. We sat in the kitchen and started downloading disks until late into the night, and Louise began to laugh at how I was able to fall asleep sitting up in a chair at my computer. I think I finally fell asleep on J’s couch and got a few hours of sleep before I had to wake up again at 4:00. Here’s the hotel on our way in.

photo (9)

When we arrived, Tara was there again for hair and makeup. We laughed about how we’d spent the whole week together, as Tara worked her magic on Christie’s hair. The morning was amazing. It’s always  an incredible feeling to have an hour to photograph couples in front of the castle, and Christie and John were such good sports. We had them running, like-literally running, down Mainstreet to the Castle. We were laughing and giggling the whole time.

Disneyland WeddingDuring the reception, I gave a few impromptu camera lessons to a young protegee. 😉

Disneyland Hotel Wedding

There were lots of kiddos at the wedding, and so I had them jumping and laughing in front of the camera and took some great action shots. It did make me miss my little boo!

When the wedding was over and we’d said our goodbyes, Louise’s husband came to meet us for his birthday. He’s also a photographer, and gave me a few tips and talked to me about better camera straps to help my shoulder and my back. I wished I could have stayed to talk with them longer, but I was completely exhausted and my bed in our little home was calling my name.

photo (12)

When I got home, Big T had prepared a special meal for me that made me laugh. So much talent!

food art After dinner, Little T had physical therapy and occupational therapy. I felt so rude because I was dozing off the whole time from being tired. I was trying to stay awake, but it was impossible! I fell asleep on the couch two seconds after they left and didn’t wake up until the next morning.

And today, we’re going to try and take Little T to the movies to see Monster’s University. We found an early show, in the hopes that the theater wont be crowded or will at least be crowded with other toddlers. I’m not sure how he’ll do, so we’re setting our expectations low and telling ourselves he may not last the whole time, but we’ll see. It could be fun. 🙂 Wish us luck! When did you all take your toddlers to the movies for the first time? If you have any suggestions for successful movie trips, I’d love to hear them!

Things have been moving full speed ahead in our household, with more time spent away than at home. Our little family is just hanging on and enjoying the ride. 🙂

Last week I had to stay at the Grand Californian (after trying to check into the wrong hotel-haha), while I photographed a few events over the course of a couple of days. Little T, Grandma K, and Big T met up with me on Friday night. On Saturday morning, Little T woke up and was amazed that the moon had disappeared from the window (we had the blinds open). He was moon gazing all night, sweet baby boy.

After we woke up, we went to Disneyland for a little bit. Little T met all of the princesses at the new Fantasy Faire, and was quite the little charmer. He’s learned that the ladies really enjoy it when he blows them kisses, and had a blast telling Cinderella and Snow White about every single cut, bruise, and scrape he’d ever gotten, and then threw in that he really really loved basketball.

photo (14)

photo (12)He didn’t know who Princess Aurora was, so he told her all about how he’d just met Snow White and Cinderella, while probably wondering why this Aurora lady was dressed up so fancy.

photo (11)

After we met with the princesses, we had to change hotels and move to the Disneyland Hotel. Big T and I photographed an awesome wedding that night until about 1:30 in the morning, but this didn’t stop Little T from waking us up at 7:00. 😉

photo (10)

We went swimming in the pool for a while, then drove over to San Diego for Baby N’s birthday party. By this time, I was too exhausted to lift a finger and couldn’t take any more photos!

Last week, I got to be a part of an art show in Pomona that features local artists. When we got there, my display kind of fell apart, ack!

photo (7)

Big T and I were the oldest people there, and my photography was by far the most cheerful. We decided that in order to fit in, next time we’ll need to take angsty pictures of parenthood like dramatic photos of Big T at 6 in the morning with Little T jumping on the bed trying to wake him up. Holy moly, we’re getting old. I may or may not have needed a glass of wine the size of my head to get through the night. 😉

photo (6)

On Friday we drove up to Fresno. I was amused that Big T’s head was cut out of this picture, and told him I was going to make it my Facebook profile, heh heh. We celebrated my mom’s birthday, and had the hardest time fitting all those candles on her cake. 😉

photo (5)

We took Little T to the park and played for a while:

photo (4)I can’t decide, is it lazier to not use your arms and bend over to get a drink, or to do it the usual way?
photo (3) photo (2)

On Sunday, we went to celebrate the life of my late step sister at her memorial service. There were so many people there, which just goes to show how so very loved she was. Here’s Little T with his cousins after the memorial.

photo

We’ve mastered the art of a four hour drive with a two year old, and came up with this sticker reward chart. Every time he is good and gets to certain places on the map, he gets a Cars sticker. If he gets all the stickers, he gets a lollipop. This kid is super motivated by lollipops.

photo (18)

In one week, going to two birthdays, two weddings, and a memorial service made me realize how important our family is. They’re the ones who get us through life. The good times, the hard times, and the bad times. So I’ll end this post with a quote that I love,

“Family, we may not have it all together-but together we have it all”.

I feel I can finally talk about my Bridget Jones moment…

I believe that if life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade….and then try to find somebody whose life has given them vodka, and have a party.  ~Ron White

The other day I was doing a photo shoot that I’m not allowed to talk about (teehee). I’d been communicating with everyone who was collaborating for the shoot through e-mail, and was excited to finally meet everyone in person. I kind of ran through the day in my head, thinking about how I’d wear my hair in one of those trendy hair knots with an outfit that looked stylish and still functional. You know, I was doing all those girly things you do when you’re trying to make a nice impression. I should have guessed that this was a recipe for some sort of embarrassing moment, because that always seems to be the way things roll around here.

On the day of the shoot, I had those exciting little butterflies swirling around in my stomach. It had felt like we’d been planning this shoot out forever and I was happy the day was finally here! I met everyone, got to work, and tried to be as professional and fabulous as I could. At one point, everyone began to walk together towards another location, when all of the sudden it began to happen. I lost my balance mid-sentence, and felt myself tilting forward and beginning to stumble with my camera in hand and some very important people around me to see it happen.

This was not one of those trips that happened in an instant. It was the kind of fall that took about a minute to play out. There were actually many points during my fall that I thought I might not fall at all, only to begin falling again. Near the end of this stumble, I gave up and realized I was heading towards the ground no matter how hard I tried to regain my balance. I splatted face down on the floor and all of my belongings spread out in front of me. I laid there really still for a moment…perhaps because I thought if I held still enough, maybe nobody would notice me on the ground. Of course, everyone was very concerned and felt terrible that I had taken such a bad fall. I wished there had been someone around to start laughing so I could have felt a little better about things (so just as a general note, if I ever fall flat on my face in front of you, PLEASE laugh your head off. I’d really appreciate it.)

In a way, it made everyone feel a little more human. It made me feel a little more human. It also made me realize that no matter how hard I try to be cool, this may never actually happen. It seems like this may actually be a pattern with me.

A friend of mind said that at least everyone would remember me. I guess there’s always that, right? 😉
