Lavender Festival

My Mom and I packed up with Little T to go to the Lavender Festival in Cherry Valley.

We were pretty amused at how much stuff we needed to pack in order to get away for one weekend…okay, so we probably didn’t need all of it. 😉

I always wonder what Little T thinks when he falls asleep in the car and wakes up in random places like the middle of a lavender field.

Lavender Festival

I asked Little T what he thought, and he seemed happy about the whole thing.

Just Rolling Along

They had lots of fun activities for Little T to enjoy.

There was even some baby romance:

Fancy Vegan Party Food

This food was GONE by the end of the night. It was like a vegan hurricane swirled by the table and snagged everything up. My sweet husband and brother in law did all of the cooking. Here’s what was on the table…

Chocolate dipped strawberries

Stuffed Mushrooms

Lemon Bars

Strawberry Tarts

Olive Tampenade

Bruschetta

Fresh Grapes

Cheese and Cracker Platter

Firefly lights make an evening magical, and they’re really very easy to do.

What you need:

Battery Operated Flickering Lights

Little Black Doggie Trash Bags for cleaning up…well, you know.

String or twine

DIY Firefly Lights

Not the best picture, but you get the idea. All you need to do is tie the trash bag around the lights, stick the flame part through, and tie some yarn or string. You can just place them in your yard, but hanging makes it look like they’re swaying and moving around. We placed them all around our yard, and when the lights went out our guests were really delighted.

To add a little more ambiance, we played music that was just sound effects of crickets chirping.

Midsummer Party Decorations Part 2

Puck's Love Potion

The goblets turned out great and everyone loved getting a sip as they entered the party. We filled them with champagne and a fresh raspberry.

Fairy Thrones

We made Fairy Thrones for guests to sit in. They turned out to be a fun focal point for the evening, and lots of our guests took a break to drink wine in the Fairy Thrones.

Masquerade

The Lanterns

The lanterns looked great with our grape vines.

Midsummer Party Decorations Part 1

Butterfly Lantern idea was from MarthaStewart.com

We picked up these lanterns from Michaels, and bought cheap scrapbook paper for the butterflies. The butterfly pattern was downloaded from MarthStewart.com.

Doves with Fresh Mint and Lemon Drops

We placed these on the tables for a sweet breath freshener.

Bubble Entrance

To make the entrance a little more magical, we had bubbles coming out of the cat door onto the walkway to our yard. We dressed up the door and floor more with rose petals, tiki torches from the dollar store, and mint.

Shakespeare Insult Game

For a fun game, we made insult cards with the use of an online Shakespeare Insult Generator. Whenever you heard somebody say the word “mask”, you gave them an insult card.

Gift Bags

We gave away a copy of “Midsummer Night’s Dream” in the gift bags.

Big T and I are having a Midsummer Night’s Dream party in a couple of weeks. I’m in charge of the decorations, so I took Little T to the Dollar Tree yesterday to see what I could find.

Dollar Store Goblets

I was really excited about these goblets. In any other setting, they’d probably look overdone, but I think they’re perfect for a fairy party. I thought for a while about how they’d be used best, and eventually decided on having them at the entrance to our party. The plan is to hand them to guests as they enter. I’m going to label the goblets with a tag that says “love potion”, with maybe a quote about love potions from “Midsummer Night’s Dream”. When I got home, I started playing with the platter they’re going to be served on.

Love Potion Tray=Take 1

I put fake rose petals on the tray and thought it looked nice. I’m going to try and find some dry ice so there can be smoke coming around the tray to make it look a little more magical. But then I thought it should smell nice too, so I picked some mint from our garden and scattered it around the tray.

Tray with Mint

It smells and looks amazing! I think it will be the perfect way to set the atmosphere for our event. At first I thought we’d make bellinis for the goblets, but I’m worried about them sitting outside. Michelle suggested champagne with a raspberry or blackberry on top. So, that’s where we are. It’s definitely coming along.

Miss. Piggy has a new hobby…

Library Time!

Miss. Piggy had me pick up a book for her at the library.

Miss. Piggy made her way into our lives a year ago. One day I was out in the front yard, when two chihuahua’s came walking by. I assumed they belonged to someone and didn’t want them to be hit by a car, so I put them in the yard and went looking for their owners. Actually, I bought two leashes and figured they would lead me to their owners, but instead they gave me a tour of the neighborhood.

I went door to door, but our neighbors on our block didn’t know us very well at the time, and they didn’t speak a lot of English. Most of them thought we were introducing our new dogs to them. They’d make a hand signal to wait, while they went and got their family members to show them our new chihuahuas.

We put up fliers, registered at the SPCA, and put up signs at the local pet stores before we decided they’d probably been abandoned. Miss Piggy looked like she’d just had puppies, so I assume she’d been used for breeding. We tried to take them to a No Kill Shelter, but they were filled with chihuahuas and couldn’t take anymore.

After months, we were able to find a stable home for one of our dogs with a friend, whom we fondly named “Officer Dangle”. We’d found a home for Miss. Piggy too, but it turned out they wanted a baby chihuahua and said they were going to give her to a neighbor down the street instead of keeping her. We didn’t want her to be passed around from house to house. She was a sweet dog and deserved a stable home, so we decided to take her back and let her stay with us.
