My job is pretty friggin cool.

This last weekend was awesome, in an, is this really my job?-kind of way.

We had an early morning castle shoot on Saturday that began at the Fairy Tale Suite at the Disneyland Hotel. Our start time was 3:45 A.M., so we stayed overnight at the DLH with Little T, Big T, and Grandma K. As we pulled up to the hotel, Little T said, “Minnie?” It freaked us out that he knows the words Minnie and Mickey. I can only guess that he learned it from daycare, but it’s crazy to think that Disney is such a big part of our culture that it’s a word little kids just know. 0_o

We got adjusted in our rooms and decided to go to Trader Sam’s for dinner and a cocktail. We ordered a fruit plate and a vegan salad and some sweet potato fries. Little T didn’t want anything to do with the fries. He can be such a health snob sometimes. 😉

After dinner, we walked around the hotel a bit. I was excited because I saw Hope, who told me they were helping with a friend’s wedding. Because of Wendy’s wedding, we saw a lot of friends walking around. Big T met up with us after having dinner with one of his buddies, and then we tried to go to sleep early so we wouldn’t be tired for the shoot.

I woke up around 2:00AM because my mind was excited and I couldn’t rest. I had made up a storyboard for this shoot and was going over it again and again in my head, thinking of the photos I wanted to try and capture and wondering what the Suite would look like. Around 3:00, I finally got up and met with my new intern, Marc. Big T met us downstairs with the equipment, and we made our way up to the Fairy Tale Suite. Across the hall from the Fairy Suite Suite was the Pirates Suite (!!!) I hope I get to see it someday.

When they opened the door to the Fairy Tale Suite, pixie dust music played and an animated Tinkerbell flew across the wall and lit up a beautiful crystal statue of the castle. No joke! 0_0 Fairy Tale Suite, indeed! We thought this was amazing, but after we had to go in and out of the room about 20 times in a row, the magic wore off just a little bit. 😉

Tara from Fairytale Hair and Makeup was there getting Tina ready. We talked about how early it was, and how amazing this was, and all three of us kept pinching ourselves. Tina was absolutely stunning, inside and out:

Around 6:45, we were taken over to the castle and had an hour to take photos. It was fun having the castle to ourselves. There are so many photos from the shoot, but I posted this on my facebook page because I had to pay a little tribute to the Walt Statue and the Disney gods. Heh heh. After the shoot, we were exhausted! Little T, Big T, and Grandma K sat by the pool while I packed things up and got ready to go home.

Little T had a giddy screaming match at the pool with another little boy. He was excited to meet someone who loves and appreciates the art of screaming. When it was finally time to drive home, I made it almost all the way there, but at the last turn to our house when I stopped at a stop sign, I closed my eyes for a second and fell asleep. Grandma K gave me a nudge and I was able to make it the rest of the way home. Of course, instead of going to sleep I wanted to see my photos from the shoot, so I attempted to look through them but fell asleep at the computer instead.

Around 6:00PM, we got ready to go and meet some friends at Disneyland again to see the Mad Tea Party. Little T read his favorite book on the tram. I just bought it from Amazon, it’s about *dun dun dun* basketball.

The first thing we did was go on the Little Mermaid with one of my best friend’s Jackie and her significant other (and Big T’s bro-mance partner), Randy:

Then we stopped by the new Ghirardelli Shop. An ice cream shop that doesn’t carry any soy ice cream. *grumbles*

Next stop was the Mad Tea Party. I wished I could have stayed longer, but I was exhausted and my foot was aching from the sprain. We stayed about 30 minutes before calling it a night. I did manage to grab some fun photos though:

All in all, a great day. And according to my body bugg, a busy one.

  • I burned 2943 calories
  • Walked 18229 steps
  • Was active for 4 hours and 57 minutes

I think that calls for a soy milkshake.

A (much needed) Mini Break

22 Tuesday May 2012

I was in need of a mini break, so we took an overnight trip to the Highland Springs Resort in Cherry Valley. It’s kind of a cool place. The whole resort is surrounded by lavender fields and it smells amazing and relaxing. The resort itself was established in the late 1800’s. It’s pretty run down now, but it’s easy to walk by the old tennis courts and pool area and imagine what it was like in it’s prime. It’s a really neat place to wander around, I’ve never been anywhere like it.

But our favorite thing was the lavender fields and the large olive trees. We had a nice dinner at their restaurant and then wandered around as the sun set.

It seems like I’m hardly ever in pictures because I always have the camera, so Big T sat me down and took this picture of me.

Little T liked watching the dust go in the air. He was so dirty after this walk, but much fun was had! He’s such a little boy. :p

And here’s Little T and Big T the next morning playing hide and go seek. He’s such a ham.

Right after this picture he ran into the bathroom and locked himself inside and we had to call security to get him out. I was totally panicked about it, but when we got the door open, he looked at me and said “geez mom, I was just brushing my teeth”. I told him not to put hand soap on my toothbrush next time.

*side note: Sometimes I forget we’re a multi-cultural family, but I was reminded when the security guys opened the door and were surprised to see Little T in there, lol.

We had a great time! We went hiking the next morning and then drove home, making a lunch stop at the Loving Hut and the Last Drop Cafe on the way, because you can’t end a good trip without a vegan banana chocolate chip cookie. That’s the law.

Little T’s Haircut postponed….

On Wednesday, I was feeling really sad and depressed about Angel. Michelle said I had to go out to dinner instead of sit around and wallow on the couch. So my girlfriends and I went to this great vegan restaurant at the Irvine Spectrum called The Veggie Grill. I’m drooling just thinking about it….

Maybe the good food had affected my brain, because on my way back to my car, I tripped walking up the stairs and sprained my foot. It wasn’t one of those little trips that you can pretend didn’t happen. It was one of those loud-everyone-stopped-to-see-what-just-happened trips. Lets just say it was “spectacularly ungraceful”. I assured everyone I was fine, and then realized I wasn’t actually fine when they all left and I realized I couldn’t walk. Michelle had to drive me to the hospital, where we laughed because the last time she checked into the hospital on foursquare was in 2010 when she was visiting me in the emergency room.  Heh heh. We had four fun filled hours together in the emergency room, while we waited to hear if it was broken or sprained.

It turned out to be a bad sprain. It’s funny, because now that I’m actually stuck here, I don’t want to sit on the couch anymore. Funny how that works. At least I’ve gotten a lot of work done, but hopefully my foot will heal soon. 🙂

P.S. My hair is going back to blonde again!

P.P.S. I’ve spent my time recovering from my sprain and losing Angel, by watching countless hours of meaningless television. I actually just downloaded the entire season of “Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaid Edition”.

It’s been a hard day….

I lost my sweet girl yesterday. My heart aches this morning and I wish we’d had more time together. She was one amazing companion. There will never be another like her. I wrote more about my Angel over at Circle of Mom’s, in case you want to hear her story.

Agh, I’m sorry I’ve been gone. I didn’t want to depress you all with my cat. Even though it’s been hard, there have been good moments that I thought I’d share:

Little T’s decided to skip bike riding and go straight to car driving:

On an early morning adventure:

I love how Little T colors with such gusto and intensity.

Playing trains with Grandma K:

Hard at work:

I went to visit Little T’s Godmomma at work, and discovered her and Traci had posted pics of Little T on their door. :p

By the end of the night, the photobooth guy was like….you guys again? teehee

Little T…or the Statue of Liberty?

My little nephew. 🙂

Fountains have the ability to entertain Little T for five minutes. I’ll take it.

Enjoying time with Miss Angel kitty:

Cats know…

Cats know how to obtain food without labor, shelter without confinement, and love without penalties~- W. L. George

My friend Kari called me when she heard about Angel (my cat). She told me to take an entire day off to spend time with Angel and shower her with love. So, Big T stayed home and watched Little T, and I sat in my room and gave Angel 100% of my attention. I put her on the windowsill so she could look outside, I gave her chicken, and I petted her all day while she purred in my lap. It was a bittersweet day. I know the next few weeks are going to be hard. She’s taking steroids right now, but they said to expect them to only help for a week or two. It helped though to have one day with her, where it was just me and Angel. It was like old times, when we lived together on my own during my early 20’s. I can’t begin to tell you how much my heart hurts right now, but I know the reason I feel this way is because of how much I love her.

But yeah, you’ll have to excuse me when I say that this sucks. This totally, totally sucks.

Easter Sunday

For Easter we spent the day with Big T’s family at Grandma K’s house. We weren’t going to be able to eat a lot of the food there, so we made a vegetable pot pie and orange and strawberry cupcakes from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. I had bought these Peter Rabbit Cupcake Holders a year ago, and I was really looking forward to using them:

The cupcakes turned out delicious, there were only a few lonely cupcakes left at the end of the night.
As always, Grandma K’s backyard was beautiful.

We’d practiced opening Easter Eggs with Little T earlier in the day, so he ran to the yard when he saw that we’d put all of the eggs out there. In the eggs we had fruit sweetened vegan jelly beans, stickers, bunny grahams, and some vegetable snack crisps.

Little T wasn’t the only one who enjoyed the Easter Eggs:

After the Easter Egg hunt, we caught up with family members:

Yep, that’s a body bugg on my arm. I wear it because I’ve been sitting so much since I started editing, and I want to make sure I get my 10,000 steps in every day.

And Little T played trains with his Uncle D:

And then he played with Dad:

We always end the night by sharing a song from each family member in the group. This year Little T even had a song. It was “Nice N Clean” by Chromeo. Little T loved to dance to everyone’s music, he has the Night at the Roxbury head bob down pat.

I hope you all had a great weekend, and a great Easter for those of you that celebrate. 🙂

Yesterday was our third anniversary, but everything has been so crazy around here that we completely forgot to make plans. My mom, who knows me so well and knows how busy it’s been, sent me an e-mail telling me not to forget to take the time to celebrate. So at the last minute, our friends Michelle and AJ offered to watch Little T while we had a quick dinner/dancing date together at California Adventure.

We started out with a glass of wine and some funny faces.

Then we moved over to ElecTronica:

And then we tested out our hot dance moves. I think Little T would have been proud.

It was only two hours, but it was one of the best dates we’d had in a long time and turned out to be a surprisingly awesome forgotten anniversary.

The Princess Trip

30 Friday Mar 2012

It’s true. Once a year, all (or at least most) of the women in our family gather for an annual princess trip to Disneyland. I’m not sure how this tradition started, but I know that my grandmother is always referred to as “the Queen Mother”, and that the trip always ends with us going down Mainstreet in a vehicle and waving to people like we’re in a parade or something. I’ve always been more of an Indiana Jones type of girl-but nevertheless, once a year I pull out the princess tiara and pink shirt and practice my princess wave.

For reasons unknown, this year started out with a kazoo contest. My team didn’t win. I’m guessing it’s because there were some shady things going on between the winners and our judge, aka=The Queen Mother.

These princesses aren’t the kind of princesses that takes their time in the morning and get to the park around noon. They’re the kind of princesses that get to the park at 7:00 a.m. and don’t leave until 11:00 at night. We didn’t really take a break until mid day when the Queen Mother demanded it.

Here she is, the Queen Mother herself, enjoying an hour of relaxation:

And here’s the whole team, Princess Power!

After this, we got into all sorts of shenanigans. I want to take this moment to apologize to anyone who waited in line with us and had the misfortune of being serenaded by a bunch of princesses with kazoos.

One Princess down!

So that’s what I did last weekend. It’s hard returning to a normal life after spending a weekend with royalty, but this princess has officially packed away her tiara until next year.

Portland Part 2

This is soooooo late! But I don’t want to forget the second half of our trip.

By this point, Little T figured out we were going to fun places every day, so he’d spend the morning crawling into his stroller and looking at us impatiently. Big T had to work at the conference, so Little T and I took a trip to the zoo. He was really excited to test out his new animal noises. Whenever we’d see a bear or a lion he’d roar like crazy. I practically ran after him with the stroller the whole time. Kid was on the move!

Little T stared at this fish display for a while. He couldn’t figure out why they weren’t in the water where they were supposed to be:

After the zoo, we met up with Big T and walked over to another vegan food cart for lunch:

This is where I ate the best chocolate peanut butter cup I’ve ever had in my life:

I got a grilled cheese sandwich and Little T had a vegetable sandwich with hummus…well, that was the plan anyway. Little T fell asleep and there was absolutely no way to keep the little guy awake to eat. Talk about running out of steam!

That night we went to a restaurant that was really bad, so I won’t mention it on here except to say that at the end of our meal they wrote a suggested 25% tip? Even this ex-waitress thought that was a little high.

After dinner, we went to the Portland Art Museum.

The next day, Big T didn’t have to work and wanted to see the Children’s Museum himself.

And then we all went to the zoo, where it started….snowing. 0_o Because of this, we stuck to the underground areas.

By this time, we began to realize that Little T was getting pretty sick. He’d had a cough all week but it was getting worse and worse. We decided to call it a day and head back to the hotel to rest.

We ordered some Indian food and spent the rest of the day watching movies.

The next day we had to stay inside again because Little T wasn’t getting any better. It was a sad way to end the vacation, but not much we could do and we had to take care of Little T.

Little T entertained himself by finger painting on steamy windows.

And I think he enjoyed taking a rest, doesn’t he look like a content little guy? Big T and I, on the other hand, were going stir crazy staying in that tiny hotel room!

The next morning we packed up our things and made one more trip to the Sweetpea Baking Company to have lunch and pick things up for the plane trip.

Sandwich:

Bagel with vegan cream cheese:

and some (half eaten-teehee) baked goods:

Little T was great on the plane trip! Isn’t this picture of him sweet?

Overall, a great trip! I can see why so many people adore Portland. We came home and our schedules got crazy, so it was nice to have a week of fun before the storm. 🙂 And that’s it! Hope you’re all having a great weekend! I’ve been working as a photographer at Wondercon, I can’t believe how busy this month has been!
